On July 14, 2021, there was an Amazon EC2 Instance connectivity issue in the AWS Frankfurt (eu-centeral-1) Region, specifically in the euc1-az3 Availability Zone.
If your production server is only hosted in a single EC2 instance in euc1-az3 Availability Zone, then most likely, your workloads are affected and so does your customers. That means a significant downtime and loss of revenue to your company.
Avoid any disruption on your mission-critical applications by launching multiple EC2 instances across different Availability Zones, or better yet, across various AWS Regions. Ensure that your Disaster Recovery Plan is in place and verify if your system backups are available at all times.
You can use the Amazon Data Lifecycle Manager (DLM) to create an automated snapshot of your EC2 instances. The AWS Backup service would also be helpful as well in backing up your EC2 instances and Amazon RDS databases. Your AWS Personal Health Dashboard can also notify you if your resources are affected whenever there is an AWS outage.
Don't leave your production systems to chance! Be prudent in doing your due diligence and double, or even triple-check your contingency plans. Never neglect your Business Continuity Plan (BCP) exercises and continuously find ways to fortify your cloud architecture.
